Waking Dreams

“Our truest life is when we are in dreams awake.” Henry David Thoreau

A few weeks ago I traveled to Boise for some much needed ME time. My friend Michelle and I had been planning a collaborative shooting trip for weeks and the anticipation of it literally kept me afloat when I was feeling overwhelmed by my daily grind. Domestic life is all consuming and while I love it, I struggle within its framework from time to time. Sometimes I just want to lose myself in the exploration of my inner artist. This can prove difficult when my reality consists of raising four beautiful children, maintaining a somewhat functional household, and being a wife to my amazing husband. On top of that, this winter proved to be a long, cold, and difficult one. Sadly, my desire to create deteriorated into excuses about the weather. My inner creative had been neglected for much too long so needless to say, this trip was a godsend. With three days away from my daily responsibilities, I was truly able to transcend into my dream state. A place of pure creativity where each day was filled with emerging concepts, new ideas, willing models, intense beauty, a variety of cameras, exploration of film, creativity, and experimentation.

This series is the first of many that I will be sharing from that trip.

So please,
immerse yourself
and dream with me.

Isaac and Kelsey :: The Wedding

It’s true that this gorgeous couple is closer to their one year anniversary than they are to their wedding but better late than never right?
I absolutely loved shooting this wedding in the morning light.
Isaac and Kelsey are two of the most passionate, charismatic couples I have ever worked with.
They lit up these photos with their intense love and breathtaking beauty.
Their simple backyard wedding was so intimate and heartfelt. I spent some time crying behind my lens.
The joy of watching these two profess their love and commitment to each other reminded me of why I love weddings so much.
The palpable emotion affected everyone who was able to witness their union. It was truly an honor.

Instant Film :: Double Exposures :: Selfies

Today one of my double exposed polaroids was featured on Let The Kids Dress Themselves.
I am completely honored and excited to get my instant film work out there a little bit more.
I thought I would follow up that feature by posting here the 3 other polaroids that I submitted that were not featured.

These were all shot with the use of a tripod using my favorite instant camera of all time. Polaroid Spectra with Impossible film.

I also thought that maybe I would try to post more on this blog in general.
I have been so terrible at posting over the past year and when I do post, a lot of the time its just one picture with the promise of a full blog post to follow which I am sorry to say, I have been terrible about following through.
I know I say this all the time, but I really am going to try to do better.
I have a ton of new work and even more old work that I want to share here.
I am going to make a better effort. If even just for myself.

Kristin - these have a ghostly impermanent quality, love these too, and yes I’m obsessing over your blog right now.

My Desert Flower

The sand dunes might be one of the most beautiful places to shoot photographs. Utah is such an amazing place filled with dynamic and diverse landscapes. I didn’t even know this place existed until this week and now I cant wait to return.

Ombre Afro Princess

After planning a day trip to the sand dunes for a little r&r and a photo shoot with my baby girl, I started to really think about how I wanted to photograph her. We haven’t done a fun shoot together in such a long time that I knew it had to be something really special.
Sophia is fun because she lets me play…hair, make up, wardrobe, and a few wild ideas mixed in for good measure. She doesn’t cringe at the thought of having a huge afro puff on her head or at the idea of sticking random things in it. She plays along and gets almost as excited as I do about it. She is my most favorite muse.

I hardly know what to say about these images other than this…
This might have been the most fun I have ever had shooting. In my life. The weather was moody. The location was a dream. My Sophia Lily was looking beyond fabulous and I was using my new Contax to capture everything. An epic collision of perfection.

Then to add to the thrills, I was able to get my scans back in unheard of speed so the waiting game that is normally torturous when you know you have something really spectacular, did not affect me. In addition to that, because I was changing rolls of film out in the open unaware of how sensitive the film really was, the film itself is covered in light leaks. Obviously something I will be more careful of in the future but for this shoot, it really was one of those happy accidents that film so readily affords.

Please enjoy this post and come back tomorrow for part two.
xoxo

jen - The light leaks could not be more perfect. The images are beautiful on their own but the light gives them an ethereal quality that is perfectly paired with your lovely sprite of a daughter!
